Questions

What people ask before they hire us

Short answers. Your case will have its own, and the first call is where you get them.

Getting started

Do you represent plaintiffs or defendants?

Both. About half our cases are clients bringing a claim and half are clients being sued. We check for conflicts before we talk about the details.

Who do you represent?

Owner-run companies, contractors and trades, landlords and commercial tenants, and individuals in a dispute with a business or a neighbor.

I was just served. How much time do I have?

Not much. The deadline to answer a complaint is short, and it runs from the day you were served. Send us the papers right away.

Is the first call really free?

Yes. It's about half an hour with a lawyer from the group your case belongs to. It doesn't commit you to anything.

Cost

How do you bill?

Usually hourly, against a written cost range you see before we file. Some collection and lien cases can be taken on a contingency or mixed fee; you'd still owe court costs and expert fees, and we'd say so in writing.

Can I get my legal fees back from the other side?

Sometimes. Some contracts and some laws let the winner recover fees. We check yours at the start, because it changes the math of settling.

The case

Will my case go to trial?

Most don't. Many settle at mediation. We prepare every case as if it will be tried, because that's what gets a fair settlement offer.

What if my contract says arbitration?

Then the case likely goes to an arbitrator instead of a judge. We've handled both, and we'll explain what changes.

How often will I hear from you?

At least every 30 days, in writing, and right away when something important happens.

If your question isn't here, bring it to the free first call. A lawyer answers it.

General answers only. They aren't legal advice for your case.
